Spellcasting 101: How to Move Energy with Intention

Casting Spells

So, you’ve got your crystals, your journal is ready, and you’ve felt the pull toward the craft. Now comes the big question: How do you actually cast a spell?

Pop culture makes it look like shooting sparks from your fingers or chanting in Latin, but real-world spellcasting is much more subtle—and much more personal. At its core, a spell is simply intention, directed by will, and supported by symbols.

If you’re ready to start weaving your own magic, here are the four basic pillars of a successful spell.

1. Define Your Intention (The Goal)

The universe can’t give you what you want if you aren’t clear about it. Before you light a single match, ask yourself exactly what you want to achieve.

  • The Rule: Keep it “Positive, Present, and Precise.”

  • Bad Intention: “I don’t want to be lonely anymore.” (Focuses on the negative).

  • Good Intention: “I am attracting a supportive, loving community into my life.” (Focuses on the goal).

2. Choose Your Correspondences (The Tools)

While you are the source of the power, tools act as “batteries” to help hold and amplify your energy. In the craft, we call this correspondence—using items that match the “vibe” of your goal.

  • Colors: Green for money, Pink for self-love, White for clarity.

  • Herbs: Cinnamon for speed, Lavender for peace, Bay leaves for wishes.

  • Elements: Fire (candles) for transformation, Water for emotions, Earth (stones) for stability, Air (incense) for communication.

3. Raise Your Energy (The Power)

This is the step most beginners skip! A spell needs “fuel” to get off the ground. You need to build up a feeling of power inside yourself before you release it toward your goal.

  • How to do it: You can chant, dance, hum, or use visualization. Close your eyes and imagine your goal as if it has already happened. Feel the joy, relief, or excitement in your chest until it feels like it’s vibrating.

4. The Action and Release (The Cast)

This is the physical part of the spell where you “marry” your energy to your tools.

  • The Action: This might be lighting the candle, tying a knot in a string, or burying a jar in the earth. As you perform the action, recite your intention aloud to “lock it in.”

  • The Release: Once the spell is done, let it go. Don’t obsess over how it will happen. Obsessing creates “lust for result,” which can actually block the energy. Trust that the work is done.

A Simple “Beginner’s Candle Spell”

Want to try it right now? Here is a 5-minute ritual for clarity.

  1. Prepare: Take a small white candle and a pin. Carve a single word into the wax (like “Truth” or “Answer”).

  2. Anoint: Rub a little bit of olive oil on the candle to “dress” it with your energy.

  3. Charge: Hold the candle in your hands and visualize a fog lifting from your mind.

  4. Cast: Light the candle. Say: “As this flame burns bright and clear, the path ahead shall now appear.”

  5. Finish: Let the candle burn down completely (in a safe place!).

🌙 Common Myth: Do I need a “Magic Circle”?

For small, daily spells, you don’t necessarily need a formal circle. However, taking a moment to ground yourself—imagining roots growing from your feet into the earth—helps ensure you are using the Earth’s energy rather than draining your own “battery.”

The “Mundane” Follow-Up

Magic is a co-creative process. If you cast a spell for a new job, you still have to send out the resumes! Think of your spell as the wind and your actions as the sails. You need both to move the boat.
